OUTDOOR LION STATUE
European Guardian, Not a Fu Dog
A seated lion on a rectangular plinth, front legs straight, head level and forward. The mane is carved in overlapping locks that run deep enough to hold shadow, and the face is naturalistic rather than stylised.
This is the western tradition, the kind that flanks the steps of a bank or a country house. It is not the Chinese guardian lion, which sits differently, has a very different mane, and usually comes with a ball or a cub under one paw.
The finish is aged gray green with darker tones settled into the mane and the plinth edges. At 22.8 inches it works singly beside a door or as a pair at the foot of steps.
What Makes This Piece Different
- The western guardian form, which is a specific thing. Seated upright with straight forelegs, a naturalistic face and a mane in overlapping locks. Chinese guardian lions sit lower, have a curled stylised mane and usually hold a ball or a cub. If you want the look that flanks a country house entrance rather than a temple gate, this is that lion, and the two are not interchangeable.
- A mane deep enough for shadow. The locks are cut rather than suggested, so the head holds contrast at midday rather than flattening out. That is where cast statues usually give themselves away.
- A plinth built into the casting. It stands on its own rectangular base, so it sits correctly on a step, a wall top or paving without needing a separate pedestal.
- Aged rather than new gray. Darker tones settle into the mane and the plinth edges. It reads as something already in place rather than something delivered last week.
Beside a door, at the foot of steps, on a wall top, flanking a gate. Guardian pieces belong at thresholds rather than in the middle of a lawn, and they read best where people pass close enough to see the mane. A pair either side of an entrance is the traditional arrangement, though one alone works at a side door.

Setup, Care, and Warranty
Placement
One piece, nothing to assemble. Set it on level solid ground, a step or a wall top.
Face it outward, toward whoever is arriving. A guardian looking into the garden has its back to the job.
Keeping the mane sharp
The carved locks hold debris and cobwebs. A soft brush every few weeks keeps the shadow depth that makes the head read properly.
Winter
Sealed concrete handles freeze and thaw well when dry. Check the plinth is not sitting in a puddle through winter, since standing water at the base is what causes damage.
Weathering
Moss in the deeper mane cuts and along the plinth suits the aged finish. It is one of the pieces that genuinely improves with a few seasons outside.

Questions Before You Choose
Is this a Chinese guardian lion?
No. This is the European form, seated upright with a naturalistic face and a mane in overlapping locks. Chinese guardian lions sit lower with a curled stylised mane and usually a ball or cub under one paw.
Should I buy one or two?
A pair either side of an entrance is the traditional arrangement and reads as deliberate. One alone works at a side door or on a wall top, where a pair would be too much.
Does it come with a base?
The rectangular plinth is part of the casting, so it stands correctly on a step, paving or a wall without needing a separate pedestal.
Where should it face?
Outward, toward the approach. A guardian statue facing into the garden is looking the wrong way.
