FOUNTAIN AND PLANTER
The Top Bowl Is for Plants, Not Water
A stepped gray stone base carrying two terracotta toned bowls, with a third bowl at the top that holds soil instead of water. Water starts below the planter, crosses between the two lower bowls, and collects in the base. Cool white light sits in each water bowl.
The planted top is the reason to choose this over any other small cascade. Most fountains ask for a spot and give you moving water. This one gives you moving water and a place to put something living, in the footprint of a single object. On a patio or a terrace where floor space is the constraint, that is a real difference rather than a feature list item.
It also softens the piece. A planted bowl at the top means the fountain has foliage in its outline, so it reads as part of the garden rather than as an object placed in it.
What Makes This Fountain Different
- A working planter at the top, which is rare and useful. The upper bowl takes soil and a real plant rather than water. On a patio or terrace you are usually choosing between a fountain and a container because there is floor for one. This is both, and the planting sits at the top where it is at eye level rather than at ground level. It also means the fountain changes through the year as the planting does, which no purely hard object can.
- Terracotta bowls against gray stone. Warm vessels on a cool stepped base means the piece carries both temperatures, so it sits with brick and clay pots as readily as with gray paving.
- Cool white light in the water bowls. The lighting is cool rather than warm, which keeps the water bright and legible against the dark terracotta after sunset. It will read cooler than warm porch bulbs beside it, so it is worth matching to what you already have.
- A stepped base, not a column. The bowls sit on offset blocks rather than on a single shaft, which gives the piece a wider stance and more visual weight at the bottom.
Two short falls, quiet and close. Because only the lower two bowls carry water, the cascade is shorter than the height suggests, so this is a soft trickle rather than a full run. It suits a seating area or a doorway where you are within a few feet. How loud it seems will still shift with the water level and the surfaces around it, which is why a fixed decibel number would tell you nothing useful about your own space.

Setup, Care, and Warranty
Setup and placement
Fill it, plug it in, done. Set it level, since bowls set at offsets overshoot easily if the base is out of plumb.
Plant the top bowl before you decide the final position, since the foliage changes the outline and the height.
Planting the top bowl
The planter and the water reservoir are separate, so you water the planting yourself. A bowl at that height dries faster than a ground level pot, so drought tolerant or trailing plants cope better than anything thirsty.
Do not overfill with loose soil. Anything that washes over the rim ends up in the water bowls below and eventually in the pump.
Water level and daily care
Keep enough water in the base to cover the pump so it never runs dry. Check every few days in warm weather.
Clear soil and leaf debris from the water bowls, particularly after watering the planter above.
Looking after the finish
In hard water areas a pale film builds on the terracotta bowl rims where the water leaves. Clean it before it sets. Keep harsh liquid cleaners off the painted finish, and avoid getting fertiliser on the stone when feeding the planting.
Winter storage
Before hard freezes, drain the base and both water bowls completely, disconnect and store the pump indoors, and dry the piece out. Empty the planter or replant it with something that overwinters outdoors.

Questions Before You Choose
Does the top bowl hold water or soil?
Soil. It is a planter, not part of the cascade. Water starts in the bowl below it. The planting and the reservoir are separate systems, so you water the plant yourself as you would any container.
What should I plant in it?
Something that copes with drying out. A raised bowl loses moisture faster than a ground level pot. Succulents, small drought tolerant bedding, or trailing plants that soften the edge all work better than anything that wants constant moisture.
Is the light warm or cool?
Cool white, in the two water bowls. Against the dark terracotta that keeps the water bright and visible after sunset. If your other outdoor lighting is warm, this will read cooler beside it.
Is it safe around children and pets?
The stepped base gives it a wide stance, which helps. Do not let children pull on the bowls or dig in the planter. Set it on a hard level surface out of the main running route and run the cord where it will not catch a foot. The recirculating water is not intended for drinking.
